Marion's story

Marion had been living in her home for 28 years, but she was yearning to move to the seaside, where her sister lived. She had been thinking about moving for a couple of years but felt overwhelmed by the process.

With our holistic approach to supporting those moving in later life we not only sold Marion's home (and achieved a great price) but also supported her with the aspects of moving that concerned her, such as the legal work, as well as the emotional reality of moving and stepping into a new chapter of life.

Marion says:

'I could not have made my move without Turners Oak and Susan’s help; I am very grateful because I’m now in a new house in a new area and very happy!'

'Being a single woman of a certain age and not good with technology made me very anxious about moving house. It had been on my mind to move but I just kept putting it off. It was too stressful.

When I heard about Turners Oak and met Susan, I immediately felt that she understood my situation and that a move may finally be possible. Susan helped me to fill in forms of which there were many, some quite complicated. She also gave me a choice of local Solicitors, so I could pop in with paperwork, as I don't like doing things online. The team produced an excellent write-up of my home, and the photographs were excellent too.

My property was not your normal family home, but they directed the right people to view. The couple who viewed my property on the second day were the people who actually bought it. They told me how lucky I was to have such a good agent, because she was very helpful to them as well.'

Linda's story

Linda has lived in her home since she was 11 years old. She is now 80. Recently she needed to move to a residential care home and therefore sell her home of 69 years (pictured above).

Linda doesn't have any family and was advised by her solicitor that she would need to sign a Power of Attorney so that they could sell her home on her behalf. Linda is independent and hugely capable and she did not want to give up control, nor did she need to. One of our values at Turners Oak is 'Inform don't instruct' with the intention of keeping clients in control and supported to make informed decisions.

I visited Linda in her care home and discussed the process of selling, bearing in mind she has never bought or sold a property in her life. I learnt all about her home and her life there. We arranged everything required to market Linda's home, completed all the pre-emptive legal forms with her, and kept her fully updated with regular visits.

We received four offers for Linda's home, each in a slightly different position and at a different price. With our focus on keeping Linda in control, I visited her again with a simple printed table detailing the offers received and things to consider. Linda read through the table and chose her buyer. It wasn't the highest offer and it wasn't the least risky either; it was who she felt comfortable with weighing up all the options.

We are now overseeing the legal process and continue to visit Linda to keep her updated and help her to answer some of the legal questions.

Along with her fabulous neighbours and the team at Barchester where she now lives, we have become an integral part of Linda's team - bringing her post, sourcing a clearance company and dropping off precious items to her. It's been a pleasure supporting Linda.

Ali's story

Ali’s mum, Barbara, is 89 years old and lives alone in Lincolnshire in a house she has lived in for 32 years.

Ali lives in Reading which, depending on traffic, can be a 5 hour drive. to her mum’s. Ali has been increasingly worried about her mum’s living situation and the distance between them.

Ali was struggling to have a conversation with her mum and make any plans for the future.

As part of our Future Planning Service we met with Ali and discussed Barbara’s living arrangements, Ali’s concerns about them, and her mum’s thoughts about moving.

We provided Ali with advice on how to have constructive conversations with her mum and share expectations; gave her information on local support that she can access now for Barbara, and provided a plan for next steps as and when the time comes for Barbara to need to move.

Ali now feels much less anxious as her mum has local support, she has a plan in place for when the time comes for a move, and can honour her mum’s decision to stay at home.
